During the week of April 13th, the Vermont Community Foundation distributed the second round of grants from both the Vermont COVID-19 Response Fund and the Community Foundation’s own discretionary grants budget, totaling $529,000. Through these channels, approximately $1.16 million has been distributed since the Fund was established on March 13th. As of April 15th, donations to the VT COVID-19 Response Fund have reached $3.2 million, which the Community Foundation will continue to distribute in multiple phases to respond to immediate needs and long-term recovery efforts across the state.

Community Foundation grants have ranged from $500 to $25,000 and have been made directly to organizations serving vulnerable populations as well as to partner organizations which are making sub-grants to their network members. This second round of grants is focused on shelters serving families and domestic violence survivors, food pantries and food shelves, as well as home health and visiting nurse agencies. A small number of grants have also been made to organizations working on language translation, coordination of community organizing efforts, and training for end of life counseling.

The VT COVID-19 Response Fund Recovery Initiatives: A Q+A on Rural Connectivity

Before the coronavirus pandemic, a reliable connection to the internet was essential for many of us. Flash forward to now, a reliable connection to the internet means access to healthcare, education, employment, customers, grocery delivery—essential for basic needs and income. Still, in Vermont, about 70,000 households and businesses either do not have internet connection or inconsistent, dated dial-up access.

What We're Learning from the VT COVID-19 Response Fund Recovery Initiatives

Last September, we announced five recovery initiatives that address key challenges magnified by the COVID-19 pandemic and set the state on a pathway to more equity and greater community and economic resilience in the face of future disruption: Rural Entrepreneurship, Food System Resilience, Rural Connectivity, Learning in Transition, and Welcoming, Equitable, Anti-Racist Communities. Over the past few months, we have interviewed the team leaders for each recovery initiative to understand why the Community Foundation chose to focus on each as part of its pandemic recovery strategy.
